Knights of Columbus of OntarioPeter Tassi and Filomena Tassi's book Opening the Door, Unleashing the Greatness in Our Teenagers is both refreshing and renewing. It is a must read for every Catholic adult interested in fostering young people's faith and spirituality. If you have ever wanted to reach our Catholic youth, especially those who challenge us the most, then you need to read this book!
What sets this book apart from others is that the authors offer practical and concrete strategies that appeal to our intellect, our emotions and our souls. They provide the reader with a 10-step guide to engage our youth, develop their faith and assist them in having a religious experience in the Church. As the authors ask, "Who needs who? Do our youth need the Church or does our Church need our youth?" If we want to insure a Church of tomorrow, we need to bring our young people back to our Church. This book will show us how to do it.
The authors are Catholic educators and campus ministers with over 30 years of experience in working with youth in Catholic high schools. They do not just deal with the youth that are already engaged in their communities. They give real examples and stories of youth who are difficult to reach. As they state in their book, "Jesus taught us to take chances and to take them on people we would least expect to succeed."
Each step is described in a chapter. The chapter begins with a scripture passage. The authors explain the step, provide real examples of experiences with youth and conclude each chapter with a prayer.
Whether you have been working/parenting young people for a very long time or whether you have only just begun working/parenting youth, this book will offer you food for your mind, your heart and your soul!
I strongly recommend this book to every Catholic parent, teacher, guidance counselor, special education teacher, student success teacher, administrator, campus minister and parish youth minister. |
